The Band of HM Royal Marines Plymouth
The Band of HM Royal Marines, Plymouth is based at
the premier training establishment of the Royal Navy, HMS Raleigh
in Torpoint, Cornwall. The band undertakes a wide variety of ceremonial
work of national importance, as well as fulfilling its main role
of providing music for the ships and establishments of the Royal
Navy.
A typical week's work may include a ceremonial parade
for a visiting head of state, several Beating Retreat displays for
the general public, a fanfare for the opening of a new prestigious
building, a concert, an evening dance and cabaret display as well
as providing orchestral background music for naval dinners. All
these engagements will take place at venues many miles apart. All
the administration and finance are handled by specialist staff from
within the band.
Musicians in the Royal Marines Band Service play at
least two musical instruments, giving the band the capability of
functioning as an orchestra and dance band. As professional musicians
the band is expected to provide all kinds of musical ensembles and
so they will also provide jazz groups, small orchestral ensembles
and 'Palm Court' orchestras and can even provide solo male and female
singers, German style 'Oompah' bands and pop or heavy metal groups
- indeed there are very few musical combinations that the Royal
Marines Band Service cannot provide.
The band performs in the knowledge that, wherever
they appear they are welcomed by an appreciative audience that enjoys
the sound and the spectacle for which the Bands of Her Majesty's
Royal Marines are famous throughout the world.
